In the latest European Union attack on Italy’s populist government, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has claimed that his policies, rather than the current government, have put a million to work across Italy.

Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas commented on President Juncker’s tenure as head of the EU Commission saying, “During his tenure as president of the European Commission 12 million jobs have been created, of which almost one million [are] in Italy,” according to Il Giornale.

The statement comes after an attack on Juncker from populist Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini who commented during a press conference alongside French populist leader Marine Le Pen in Rome: “The enemies of Europe are those who find themselves in the bunker of Brussels. The enemies of Europe are Moscovici and Juncker who have brought precariousness.”

Ms Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, French member of parliament, and former presidential candidate, added: “We, on the other hand, do not want to pay the accounts of wild globalisation.”

The row between Salvini and Juncker also comes after the Italian minister blamed speculators for the 300-plus point bond spread that some have referred to as an attack on the Italian economy.

Mentioning Hungarian-American billionaire financial speculator George Soros by name, Salvini said: “If I wanted to think badly I would say that behind the [bond] spread of recent days is a move by speculators like [George] Soros who are aiming for the failure of a country, to buy its remaining healthy businesses at a bargain price.”

The statement is not the first time Salvini has mentioned the left-wing billionaire. In July the League leader said that “Soros wants to fill Italy and Europe with migrants” and added that Soros “would like Italy [to become] a giant refugee camp because he likes slaves”.
